Ali’s Story

Hi! My name is Alessandra “Ali” Mijares and I was born 16 weeks early. My Mama and Papa were at the doctor’s office for their 6-month sonogram when they were told something was wrong. I wasn’t getting enough blood and oxygen and my parents were told they would need an emergency C-section. I know they were very scared, but I was ready to meet everyone and I knew I was in good hands.
On March 17, 2005 at 4:53pm, I was born weighing 412 grams (14 oz.) and measuring 11 inches. For the next 5 months, my home was the St. Peter’s University Hospital NICU in New Brunswick, NJ. My Mama and Papa made sure to visit me every day along with family and friends. My first few months were very rough on everyone. I developed some complications and had to have two intestinal surgeries as well as laser eye surgery. My doctors and NICU nurses took extra special care of me and soon I was growing and gaining weight.
On August 20, 2005, I finally came home with my parents. My doctors said I was well enough to go home, but would need to be on oxygen as well as an apnea monitor. I still continue to see all my different doctors and also a physical and speech therapist to make sure I reach all my developmental milestones. I’m enjoying being home especially cuz I have so many toys to play with!! But most of all, I just love being with my parents and spending time with my family.

I am now 2 years old and still growing. My Mama says I’ve got the run of the house and she’s having a hard time keeping up with me! I love to run and play with my cousins and of course I loooooove watching Elmo! I want to thank everyone for all their prayers and support for my family and me.
